Starting therapy is easier when you know the steps. Here is exactly how it works at Balancy, from the first free call to your first full session.
Every therapist at Balancy starts with a free 15-minute consultation, by phone or video. It is a short introductory conversation, not a therapy session. You describe, in general terms, what you are dealing with, hear how the therapist works, and ask about approach, fees, scheduling and anything else on your mind. There is no charge, and no obligation to book afterwards.
Request a consultation through our contact page and we will suggest the therapist who fits what you described: their experience with your concern, their approach, languages, format and schedule. If you already have someone in mind from the therapists page, name them in the form and we will send you their booking link directly.
Bookings, intake forms and records are handled on your therapist's secure, PHIPA-compliant booking platform. You pick a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends with many therapists, and complete a short intake form before the session.
A first session is mostly about understanding: what you are dealing with, what you have tried, and what you would like to change. Your therapist explains how they work, how confidentiality works and its limits, and together you agree on a direction. You can meet in person in Burlington or Oakville, by video call, or by phone. It is completely normal to feel nervous; every therapist here has had this conversation many times.

No. The consultation is a chance to meet the therapist and ask questions. There is no charge and no obligation to continue.
Tell us, and we will match you with someone else. Fit matters in therapy, and a consultation that leads to a better match has done its job.
Whatever brought you here, in whatever order it comes out. Your therapist will ask gentle questions about what you are dealing with, your history in brief, and what you would like to be different. You never have to share more than you are ready to.
Meet the therapist first. Decide about sessions after.
