How it works

What individual therapy actually involves

Individual therapy is the umbrella format most people picture: you and a therapist, meeting regularly, working on what you brought in the door. That can be a specific concern, like anxiety or burnout, or something harder to name, like the same situation repeating in every relationship or job. Sessions give it a structure: understanding the pattern, building skills to respond differently, and reviewing honestly whether life outside the room is changing.

An approach matched to you

Our therapists draw on several established approaches, and the free consultation is where you find out which one fits you:

  • CBT works on the thought patterns and habits that keep problems going, with practical tools between sessions.
  • DBT skills build concrete ways to manage intense emotion, overwhelm and moments of crisis.
  • Gestalt therapy works through awareness and presence, helping you understand your patterns rather than only manage symptoms.

Many therapists blend approaches as the work develops. What matters most is fit: a therapist whose style you can actually talk to, working on goals you chose together.

You do not have to choose alone

If you are not sure which therapist or approach fits, say so in the consultation request. Tell us in general terms what you are dealing with, and we will match you with a therapist who works with it, in the format and at the fee that suits you.

Online sessions start at $50, with a sliding scale, and in-person fees are $140 in Burlington and $160 to $190 in Oakville. Psychotherapy is exempt from HST, so the fee you see is the fee you pay. What can individual therapy help with?

People come to individual therapy for anxiety, low mood and depression, stress and burnout, self-esteem, relationship patterns, difficult experiences and life changes, among other concerns. You do not need a diagnosis or a tidy explanation to start. In the free consultation you describe in general terms what is going on, and the therapist confirms whether their approach fits what you need.

Can I see a therapist in person?

Yes. In-person individual therapy is available in Burlington at 3425 Harvester Road and in Oakville, with an additional in-person option in Toronto. Every therapist also works online by secure video, and some sessions can be held by phone if you prefer.

Do I need a referral to start therapy?

No. Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers in Ontario accept self-referrals, so you do not need a doctor's note to begin. You can request a free consultation directly.

What happens in the free 15-minute consultation?

It is a short introductory call or video meeting. You describe in general terms what you are dealing with, hear how the therapist works, and ask about fees, scheduling and approach. There is no charge and no obligation to book a full session afterwards.

How soon can I start?

Every therapist at Balancy is currently accepting new clients. After you submit the consultation request, you receive a reply with a direct booking link for the matched therapist, and you choose a consultation time that suits you.
