Families rarely struggle because one person is the problem. They struggle in patterns: conversations that escalate the same way, a teen who has gone quiet, roles that no longer fit as children grow and parents age. Balancy Counselling & Psychotherapy is a local group practice offering psychotherapy and counselling in person in Burlington and Oakville, and online. Family support starts with a free 15-minute consultation.

See relationship therapistsIn family therapy, the focus is the relationships between family members, not a single person singled out as the problem. The therapist helps the family slow down its familiar patterns, the escalation, the silence, the same argument with different words, until everyone can see the pattern clearly enough to try a different move.
A common reason families come in is a teenager: conflict over rules and screens, withdrawal, stress, or a hard season after a separation or a move. Meeting together lets the work address both sides of the pattern, what the teen is carrying and how the household responds, rather than treating the teen as a problem to be fixed.
Family therapy is not only for households with children. Adult siblings navigating a parent's care, parents and adult children stuck in old roles, and blended families finding their footing all use the same kind of support: structured conversations, clearer boundaries, and communication that does not depend on everyone already agreeing.
The starting format is agreed in the free consultation, and it can change as the work develops.
In person: family support is available face-to-face in Burlington (3425 Harvester Road) and in Oakville, with an additional in-person option in Toronto. Clients come from across both cities, from Aldershot, Roseland and Headon Forest in Burlington to Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Joshua Creek in Oakville.

Online: sessions by secure video are open to clients located in Ontario, and family members can join from different homes, which helps when a teen is at school, a parent is travelling, or relatives live in different cities. Bookings, intake and records are handled on a secure, PHIPA-compliant platform.

Fees depend on the therapist and format, and session fees across our practice run from $50 to $190. Online sessions start at $50, with a sliding scale, and in-person fees in Burlington and Oakville run from $140 to $190. Psychotherapy is exempt from HST, so the fee you see is the fee you pay. The exact fee for your family's sessions is confirmed in the free 15-minute consultation, before you book anything.
It depends on what you are working on. Sometimes the whole household meets together, sometimes parents meet first, and sometimes one family member starts individually and others join later. In the free consultation you describe your situation in general terms, and the therapist suggests a starting format, which can change as the work develops.
Family therapy often helps where a teen's struggles and the family's communication patterns are tangled together: conflict at home, withdrawal, stress around school, or a transition like separation. Meeting together lets the therapist work on the pattern between family members, not only on one person's behaviour.
That is a common and legitimate place to start. Individual therapy focused on your own side of family relationships, how you communicate under stress, what you need and where your boundaries sit, can change the dynamic at home even before anyone else joins. If relatives become willing later, the work you have done usually makes joint sessions more productive.
