Difficult experiences can keep shaping the present long after they are over, through anxiety, shutdown, irritability, or a body that will not settle. Balancy Counselling & Psychotherapy is a local group practice offering psychotherapy and counselling in person in Burlington and Oakville, and online. Our trauma-informed therapists work at a pace that respects where you are, and every first step is a free 15-minute consultation.

See trauma therapistsTrauma therapy is not about reliving what happened as fast as possible. It usually starts with steadiness: sleep, daily coping, and ways to calm a nervous system that is stuck on high alert or shut down. Only with that foundation in place does the work move, gradually and with your consent, toward processing the experiences themselves, so they lose their hold on the present.
Many people researching trauma therapy come across EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a structured approach developed for processing traumatic memories. Our longer guide walks through how EMDR and trauma therapy work, so you can arrive at the free consultation with informed questions about which approach fits your situation.

No. Good trauma therapy is paced, and you stay in control of what you share and when. Early sessions usually focus on steadiness, sleep, and day-to-day coping before any deeper processing. A trauma-informed therapist will not push you to recount details before you have the support and skills to do it safely.
EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured approach developed for processing traumatic memories, and it is one of the approaches people often ask about alongside CBT and body-based work. Our guide to EMDR and trauma therapy explains how it works and what to consider. In the free consultation you can ask which approaches a therapist uses and what they would recommend for your situation.

It is a short introductory call or video meeting. You can keep it general: what life is like now, and what you would like to change. You hear how the therapist works with trauma, and ask about fees, scheduling and approach. There is no charge and no obligation to book a full session afterwards.
