Home › Grief and Life Transitions
Grief is not only what follows a death. It is also what follows a separation, a diagnosis, a retirement, a child leaving home: the disorientation of a chapter ending before the next one has begun. Balancy Counselling & Psychotherapy is a local group practice offering psychotherapy and counselling in person in Burlington and Oakville, and online. Support starts with a free 15-minute consultation.

See therapistsGrief counselling is not about getting over a loss on a schedule. It is a place to say the unsayable things out loud, to make sense of a changed life at your own pace, and to get support for the practical weight grief carries: sleep, concentration, work, and relationships with people who may not understand why you are not yourself yet.
There is no stage checklist to complete and no point by which you should be fine. Sessions follow what is present for you: the sharp early weeks, the quieter ache that arrives later, the anniversaries and reminders, and the slow work of building a life that includes the loss rather than being organized around avoiding it.
Our therapists draw on approaches including CBT for the thought patterns that keep people stuck, and developmental and attachment-based work for transitions with deeper roots. The free consultation is where you find out which fit feels right.
In person: grief counselling is available face-to-face in Burlington (3425 Harvester Road) and in Oakville, with an additional in-person option in Toronto. Clients come from across both cities, from Aldershot, Roseland and Headon Forest in Burlington to Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Joshua Creek in Oakville.

Online: sessions by secure video are open to clients located in Ontario, and meeting from home helps on the days when getting across town feels like too much. Bookings, intake and records are handled on a secure, PHIPA-compliant platform.

Online sessions start at $50, with a sliding scale, and sessions with a therapist who focuses on life transitions are $150 online. Psychotherapy is exempt from HST, so the fee you see is the fee you pay. Many extended health plans cover Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, and every therapist offers a free 15-minute consultation first.
No. People also seek support for the grief that comes with separation and divorce, a diagnosis, infertility, miscarriage, losing a job, retirement, or a child leaving home. If a chapter of your life has ended and the next one has not yet taken shape, that in-between season is a legitimate reason to come in.
There is no required waiting period, and no deadline either. Some people come within weeks, when daily life feels impossible to carry. Others come a year or more later, when the support around them has faded but the grief has not. Whenever you are reading this page is a reasonable time to ask for support.
Yes. Grief counselling is available by secure video, from your own home, which many people prefer when leaving the house feels like a lot. In-person sessions are also available in Burlington and Oakville, with an additional in-person option in Toronto.
